Shenzhen deserves a few days of your Hong Kong trip if you enjoy good food, cocktail bars, and interesting shops.
Vannessa and I had returned to Hong Kong several times without crossing the border. On this trip, our friend Avery joined us, and we finally made time for Shenzhen. We found excellent meals, accommodation that gave us more space for our money, and enough to do that a rushed day trip would have felt limiting.
The border takes some planning. Once you’re through it, give Shenzhen time of its own. We were glad we did.
Start with the food
Roast pigeon at Da Ge Fan in Futian’s Coco Park was one of our favourite meals. The food was excellent, the room was attractive, and the tea and snacks provided while we waited were a thoughtful touch.
Coconut hot pot was another worthwhile stop. We had it twice, and the coconut-water broth was a welcome change from the hot pots we knew. Try it, but leave room for the pigeon and dim sum. Those are the meals we’d prioritize on a return.
The prices we encountered made ordering another dish an easy decision. We could try a good range of food without every meal becoming a major expense.
Tea and coffee stops filled the gaps. Heytea, Chagee, Molly Tea, and M Stand all featured. Leave room for a few of these along the way; we enjoyed making them part of the day rather than treating them as quick refreshments between activities.
Obsidian for cocktails, MO Bar for the skyline
Obsidian was our standout. During our visit, it was hosting a collaboration with Manhattan from Singapore, with five cocktails to explore. We enjoyed the drinks and the room enough that it became one of the places we’d most like to revisit.
MO Bar at the Mandarin Oriental offered a different appeal. The view over Shenzhen at night was excellent, and the drinks held their own against it. A skyline can get you into a bar; it shouldn’t have to carry the whole evening.
We’d put Obsidian first for a cocktail-focused night and choose MO Bar when the setting is part of the occasion. Check Obsidian’s current programme—the Manhattan collaboration was part of our visit, rather than a permanent offering.
Give the shops some time
UpperHills was an enjoyable place to wander, particularly if you like design, outdoor gear, and a good coffee stop.
Its Snow Peak store was difficult for me to leave empty-handed. I ordered a portable camping version of cornhole. The staff sourced it overnight and had it ready the next day.
That service was the detail that stayed with me. There was also a coffee shop and sitting area attached, making it somewhere to spend time rather than simply buy something and move on.
We also visited MixC World and Huaqiangbei. Give Huaqiangbei more time if electronics and gadgets interest you. For a leisurely browse, UpperHills was the place we particularly enjoyed.
Stay centrally and keep departure day simple
With Avery joining us, a two-bedroom apartment made sense. We had a bathroom, a kitchen we had little incentive to use, and enough room to settle in. Being close to the places we wanted to eat and drink made the stay easier.
Choose accommodation around your plans. A lower room rate loses some of its appeal if every outing starts with a long journey.
We’d also leave the luggage behind for park visits. Our attempt to find a drone-delivery station in Lianhuashan Park ended with us in the wrong section, dragging suitcases behind us. We’d underestimated the distance and tried to fit too much into departure day.
A few days gave us time for meals, evenings out, shopping, and recommendations from friends. That’s the pace we’d recommend. Shenzhen was worth more than a quick look across the border.
