George Town is a place we’d recommend planning around food. Choose a few meals you’re excited about, leave time to walk between them, and keep some evenings open.
Vannessa and I spent four days there, joined on this trip by our friend Avery. We returned to places we liked, followed recommendations, and spent longer in bars because the people made us want to stay.
For a first visit, we’d prioritize a mix of hawker meals, a few good bars, and time at the Blue Mansion and Kek Lok Si. Here’s what stood out.

Start with New World Park and char kway teow
New World Park became a regular stop because it offered plenty of choice in one place. We enjoyed oyster omelette and fried rice from Fried Rice King, curry mee, and herbal soup that was particularly welcome after a late night.
It’s the kind of stop we’d put early in a visit, then return to when everyone wants something different.
At Charcoal Seafood, watching a man work a wok over high flames led to our first char kway teow. It became one of the dishes we talked about most afterwards.
Restaurant Penang Fast Food, across from our hotel, was another good find. It looked close to finishing service when we arrived, but the meal was excellent. The name had done little to prepare us for it.
We also enjoyed pastries and durian ice cream at Banhang, noodles at Tok Tok Mee Bamboo Noodle and Mother and Son Wonton Mee, and egg tarts at Oriental Kopi.
Spread the meals out. You’ll enjoy these stops more if you arrive hungry rather than determined to finish a list.
Drunken Gelato was our favourite return stop
Drunken Gelato was the bar we kept finding reasons to revisit.
Bob, Christine, and Jack made conversation easy and were willing to entertain our cocktail ideas. By our second visit, we were discussing drinks inspired by a bo lo bao and curry mee. We enjoyed what they made and the process of getting there.
Those were personal requests rather than standard menu recommendations. The reason we’d send a friend is the hospitality and the willingness to engage with what we liked.
No Bar Here gave us another memorable encounter. We asked Hee about durian cocktails and ended up trying a durian-infused spirit left by a guest bartender. It was something we discovered by talking rather than choosing from a familiar list.
Backdoor Bodega and Good Friends Club were enjoyable stops too. With limited time, Drunken Gelato would be our first return visit, followed by another evening exploring the bars nearby.

Ask where to eat afterwards
On our last night, the team at Drunken Gelato sent us to Nasi Kandar Asik Maju after they closed.
I asked the man serving to give me what he thought was best and not hold back. He didn’t. Rice and curry after an evening of cocktails turned out to be an excellent decision.
It’s worth asking people whose recommendations you’ve already enjoyed where they eat themselves. That question gave us a meal we hadn’t planned.
A Grab driver also recommended a durian vendor, but we ran out of time. We tried durian in ice cream and a drink; a proper fruit tasting remains something we want to make time for.

Leave space for the Blue Mansion and Kek Lok Si
Cheong Fatt Tze, the Blue Mansion, was worth taking a break from eating to visit. We enjoyed the building and courtyard, and would give it a place in a first-time itinerary.
Kek Lok Si was another worthwhile outing. The views and scale of the place rewarded the effort, although walking in the heat made it more demanding than wandering between food stops.
Give it enough time and arrive with some energy. We’d avoid squeezing it into an already crowded afternoon.
What we’d do differently
We’d keep fewer fixed food stops and give ourselves more room to return to favourites.
We’d also check before bringing outside drinks to a stall. Avery bought three beers one afternoon, only to discover that the next place expected us to buy theirs if we wanted to drink there.
He carried ours around George Town for hours. They were considerably warmer by the time we found somewhere to open them.
A short list, a good appetite, and room for a recommendation would be our approach again. George Town gave us plenty to work with.
Before you go
Practical information checked 19 September 2026.
Book the Blue Mansion ahead. Its official tour page recommends advance booking. Check current sessions, prices, and availability before arranging your visit. Official Blue Mansion tours
Check business hours and locations. Confirm the places you’re travelling specifically to visit, particularly individual food stalls and bars.
Allow several days. Four days gave us a good mix of meals, walking, and evenings out. We’d choose a similar length of stay again, with room for the places we missed.
Pace the afternoons. Leave breaks between meals and longer walks. Ask before bringing outside food or drinks into another business.
